Many people seeking help with their learning difficulties do not know if it would be better to go to a tutoring center or finding a private tutor. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and individuals should carefully consider both to make the best decision on which one to choose
Learning Centers
Tutoring centers include places like Sylvan, Kumon, and Huntington. Most require that students take a diagnostic test before placing Students in the program. These tests generally measure the students' skills in reading and math. Program managers will discuss the results with parents and recommend a course of study to strengthen these areas. Students who need assistance in other areas such as writing and study skills will be asked to wait until they have completed their math and reading programs, because these two areas stand out as essential foundations that must be mastered before other issues can be covered.
Most time mentoring centers do not help students with their homework. Its main objective is to improve basic skills in reading and math for students weak in these areas. The reading program usually consists of exercises that require students to read passages and answer multiple choice questions about them. Students normally be considered again after a certain number of hours in the program to ensure they are making progress. The math curriculum for students move through a series of mathematical exercises that require them to meet a certain level of proficiency before they can advance to the next skill.
In the tutoring centers, students often work with a teacher in a small group of two to four students. Teachers often assign students the material that may work independently, and then grade these exercises when students do. Sometimes teachers will give students information about their work before moving to the next assignment for the student.
The advantage of tutoring centers is that they are a great way for students to drill in your weak areas of reading and mathematics. Often, this results in improved skills and greater confidence in themselves better grades in general at school. The downside of these programs is that students do not get one-on-one help with homework they are fighting today. For some students, may seem like that are spinning wheels and never catch up they need to be in order to succeed in school.
Teachers
On the other hand, the tutors provide one-on-one help in specific subjects that students are having trouble with school. Tutoring centers say that this is only a band aid approach and does not address the underlying weaknesses that must be strengthened academics for the student to ultimately succeed. However, the tutors, should be able to be able to recognize any weak area of a student can have, and assign students material to improve these areas after their work has been completed.
Tutors provide students with immediate feedback and explanations about things that do not understand in school. They often develop a close and give students a trusted person who can talk about their academic challenges. Many times students improve their study habits, grades, and confidence after working with the right teacher.
One individual tutors have disadvantage is that they have many resources at their disposal as tutoring centers. They have many books for consideration of specific skills, and not having access to diagnostic tests that help identify weaknesses for students. That said, teachers have the advantage of a more personal relationship with their students.
The key to the success of any mentoring program is consistency. Students should submit to their regularly scheduled appointments. The only reason not to go to school is because of the disease. If students take their classes seriously, can benefit learning center or a tutor, or both. The decision should be based on individual needs of students and the learning environment is best for them.
