Just to recap on Part 1 of this history, we have a golfer who thought it was "chicken" because it was uncomfortable with the shooting, he knew he should play well and took another club (the one he was comfortable with) and hit a perfect shot in the middle of the fairway. Despite hitting a great shot, he gave himself the trouble of being a "chicken".
So why did he not feel he had played the forehand? These are a few reasons here. One is that he did not want others to think it was a chicken. He said they know he was "deflated". Well, in my mind that a terrible reason to worry. Your goal in each and every golf shot is to put the ball where you want it to go and it does not matter how you get there and it does not matter what anyone thinks. But most of us do not worry what others will think, to seek the approval is a natural instinct, but it serves no purpose to be to allow that emotion to take over when you play golf. You must learn to focus on the logistics of the task perform and banish competing emotions from your mind.
A second reason why he did not feel he had played the forehand is he fought frustration that had for some time, it had been aging more and more comfortable with these types of shots and the more he thought about this, the more uncertain as he was hovering on the spot … and yet he knew he could make this move, he should be able to make this move, and he knew he would just take the club to the shot and overcome his fears and frustrations … and so do not do that, he was a chicken (in his mind, not mine).
To have played that shot in that state of mind was totally wrong. Golf is a game of confidence, the ball goes where your mind and your emotions go. If a bit of you think of something, while another bit is thinking something different, the golf ball will also "be in two minds" and his flight will be reflected. Your frustrations and fears will sent by your breathing, your embrace your tempo, rhythm and swing … and the ball will go where you really, basically, that the ball should go.
My friend, when we played, made the right choice, the courageous and intelligent. He played the shot, he was confident with. That's all that matters. To play the ball you are more confident, work is to choose each time. It does not matter if it's the right time, technically speaking in a perfect world, if you know what I mean.
Another thing that many golfers who do when they have lost confidence with one shot in particular is to swap clubs they buy a new toy! And sometimes this works. If you expect to work for you this will probably … at least for a short period of time … and short time is sometimes enough to regain your confidence with these shots. This, however, is not the best solution. These clubs before you work DID and they still do. It's all in your mind.
So what should you do when you're confidence is down to a particular shot or club?
You can go to the beach and practice until you get comfortable again. If it works, great, you've cracked. If this does not or can transfer your confidence on the course, play a different shot when you're comfortable. Do not play that every time you feel ill at comfortable with it. Leave this coup "in the bag" until the memory of fear and frustration faded, and then one day (quite quickly), you'll be on the trail, you see that shot in the eye of your mind, leave the club and hit quite new.
The thing avoid is to let you make this move (for fear of being called a "chicken") when you're not confident, creating more "BAD" hits stores in your mind, building the belief that you can not hit this shot, creating an expectation that you can not do, and so on.
In golf, confidence is key.
