2010 San Francisco 49ers forecast
The San Francisco 49ers 8-8 record in 2009 was their best result since its inception in 10-6 in 2002. Was the second consecutive season that the 49ers finished second in the NFC West, and they seem to have the best chance of winning the division over the years with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner lose out in retirement. Again this team must complete before simply get returned to the division them. Below is my 2010 San Francisco 49ers preview, plus my prediction on where they finish the season in the NFC West.
Offence
Just how the 49ers will take place in 2010 will depend on progress quarter Alex Smith, who is seeking to finally live up to its potential after being drafted No. 1 overall back in 2005. Smith played well at times in 2009 but still has much room for improvement. The 49ers added another former No. 1 overall pick David Carr, who will act as the lead backup to Smith.
One thing that should make you think that Smith will have a better season the biggest improvements made to the 49ers ahead on the offensive line. The 49ers had two first round picks and used them to tackle Anthony Davis and guard Mike IUPAT. Davis will not immediately on the right side, while IUPAT will join forces with left tackle Joe Staley at left guard. With the new additions Look for 2009 right tackle Adam Snyder Chilo Rachal in the battle for the position of starting right guard. This unit figures to make drastic improvements this season.
Attention to the game running 49ers this season, the improved offensive line should open a lot of big holes for Running back Frank Gore, who had one of his best seasons of his career in 2009 with 1120 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gore has been a workhorse for the offense in his five years with the team, but the plan is to define more Gore in 2010 and allow the second year back Glen Coffee and freshman Anthony Dixon to take support some of his door.
The 49ers should have waited a bit to see what they got in 2009 first-round pick Michael Crabtree, but they must be happy that this guy is in a 49ers uniform for some time to come. Crabtree looked very impressive in 11 starts last year entering 48 passes for 625 yards and two scores. I'm looking to have a Crabtree second monster season, and will soon be bundled with other elite receivers in this league. The 49ers also have a solid No. 2 receiver Josh Morgan and one of the best in the league tight ends Vernon Davis, who led the team with 13 touchdown receptions in 2009.
Defense:
The 49ers were one of the defenses advanced than in the NFL last season, and that does not appear to change in 2010, like all return three defensive lineman. Aubrayo Franklin was find a pleasant face to face, and his strong play forced the team to use the franchise tag on him. Defensive end Justin Smith has an engine that seems never stop and fellow defensive end Isaac Sopoaga was a game reliable starter in 79 of 80 games last teams.
Another reason the 49ers were so good against the run, is Pro linebacker Patrick Willis, who rarely lets a rider get by him. Takeo Spikes is back to play alongside Willis in the middle, and has surprisingly played well despite the fact that it is getting up there in age. Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson are back outside, and the team is hoping to get a much better season in 2010 Haralson.
The 49ers were 21st in the league against the pass in 2009, but much of that has to do with the fact that Nate Clements cornerback started only six games. Clements is back and healthy for the 2010 season and once again teamed with Shawntae Spencer. The 49ers back in 2009 starting safeties Michael Lewis and Dashon Goldson, but used their second-round pick on safety Taylor Mays USC, and it will not be long before they end up making big plays for this defense.
Prediction – 1st NFC West: I think the 49ers win the West is just 9-7, but I think they end up finishing the right around the 06/10 season. The key will be to ensure that they at least win one of two against the Cardinals and to avoid any upsets against the Seahawks and Rams.
